Knoxville is the 3rd biggest city in Tennessee just behind Memphis and Nashville. Knoxville is in Knox County, Tennessee. The city has a total population of over 180,000 and the metro population is over 655,000. Knoxville is the oldest of Tennessee's four major cities. It also was the state's first capital until 1819 when the capital was moved to Murfreesboro. The town was named in honor of the first Secretary of War, Henry Knox.

Knoxville is known as The Marble City. In the early 1900s a number of quarries were active in the city, supplying Tennessee pink marble to most of the country. The National Gallery in Washington is constructed of Knoxville marble. Knoxville was also known as the Underwear Capital of the World. In the 1930s more than 20 textile and clothing mills operated in Knoxville. In the 1950s the mills began to close which caused a population loss of 10% by 1960.

Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee. The sports teams, called the Volunteers, are extremely popular in the area. Knoxville is also the home of the Women's Basketball Hall.
